Does pineapple belong on pizza?
March 2, 2023
Whether or not pineapple should be a pizza topping is one of the greatest arguments. This debate has been going on since the “Hawaiian pizza,” a cheese pizza with ham and pineapple, was created. Despite the name of the pizza, this combination was not invented in Hawaii, nor was it an Italian invention; the pizza was invented in Canada by a Greek man named Sam Panopoulous, in 1962. An article about this argument casted a vote in which 87 people participated, 57% of people voted to have pineapple on pizza and 43% voted not to have pineapple on pizza.
Pizza is meant to be a hot and savory tasting food; pineapple on the other hand is normally a cold and acidic fruit but it can be baked, grilled, etc. Pineapple just overall tastes better raw over baked. The acidic mix of pineapple and tomatoes can be a bit much for some people. I will say, Hawaiian pizza can be better if it is made right, like using fresh pineapple instead of canned. Although I personally don’t see how it could make a good combination regardless of how it is made, genes do play a big role in why or why not people like pineapple on pizza and they can’t do much about that.
Pineapple on pizza is not a good mix. Pineapple shouldn’t go on pizza because it is technically a berry. Pineapples are not a singular fruit, but lots of berries grown together. Why would you want berries on your pizza? In addition, adding pineapple would make the pizza too juicy. When the pineapple is being baked, the juice oozes out which may eventually lead to the bread getting soggy, but this doesn’t always happen. When it does, this affects the texture, and not in a very positive way. The texture of pizza can determine whether or not you end up enjoying it. Most people can agree that soggy pizza isn’t as good as crispy pizza, however I know soggy bread isn’t limited to just Hawaiian pizza.
After everything that has been stated, pineapple shouldn’t go on pizza. It just isn’t that good of a combination with cheese and tomato sauce, and not to mention that there are so many more options for toppings that can be chosen instead. Finally, by all means, if you enjoy it, go for it. In the end, everyone’s taste buds are different and it is your choice.
