Harry Styles deserved “Album of the Year” award
February 24, 2023
It’s been a great couple weeks for Harry Styles, or should I say Gary? Producer Kid Harpoon of award winning album Harry’s House explains “I call him Gary because he’s etched his name so deeply into our culture that sometimes it’s easy to forget the human. The boy from a village in Cheshire, England working in a bakery who chased his dream. And now years later, he’s about to perform Grammy Award-winning music for you tonight.”
On February 5th, 2023, Harry Styles was one of the many guests and performers of The Recording Academy’s 65th Annual Grammy Awards to represent the outstanding achievements throughout the music industry. There is an incredible amount of categories regarding the awards like the first one given out Best Pop Vocal Album as Harry Styles won alongside Album of The Year for Harry’s House.
2022 was Harry Styles’ year; whether you like it or not, he is one of the biggest pop stars of this generation and has done many things to improve that title. The making of his album this past year was very intimate. The title “Harry’s House” was inspired by Haruomi Hosono’s album released in 1973 Hosono House. Harry has stated how much he loved that, and took that title into a literal sense with his own name. As Harry explains the background of this album in a Zane Lowe interview, he says “It felt like it took on this whole new meaning and it was about, like: imagine, it’s a day in my house, what do I go through? A day in my mind, what do I go through? In my house I’m playing fun music, sad music, I’m playing this, I’m playing that. It’s a day in the life.”
There are beautiful and creative songs within this album but “As It Was” was the single released for the album, it got the most streams for a song in its first week of release, and became the longest running number one single on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. I personally streamed it more than 100 times the second it came out in just a day, so overall it was pretty big and was one of the songs that made the album complete.
The Grammy’s ended the award ceremony part of the night with presenting Album of The Year award, which Harry won. Reina, a 78 year old fan who has supported him throughout the years gave this very award to Harry resulting in a big hug from him. He continued with his speech saying “I think on nights like tonight it’s important for us to remember there is no such thing as ‘best’ in music. I don’t think any of us sit in the studio making decisions on what is going to get us one of these…This is so, so kind. This doesn’t happen to people like me very often…This is so, so nice. Thank you very, very much.” As said, he was just your average teenage boy who decided to take a shot at what he loved and has gotten so far because of it. Harry is considered very “down to earth” while always showing a lot of appreciation for his fans and his success as well, making him have an appeal like no other. He knows who he is but doesn’t go completley out of his way to become this huge super star, he just is one. Some people have taken his speech into a completely different scenario, and people were even screaming during his speech “Beyonce should have won” and while everyone loves Beyonce let’s be aware she has the most Grammys of all time, I’m sure she is completely okay with her 32 awards. There is a first time for everything and everyone so he definitely deserved his first Album Of The Year Award. Whether you like him or don’t like him, there’s nothing you can do about it because he’s number one.
