The boys and girls on the Cavelero freshman football team have been starting out strong this season, and they are hoping to continue to do so. Football has been a big part of most of their lives, from the ripe age of 5 to just this year. A large number of them got into football through family members such as parents, siblings, and distant relatives. As Gino Howard #3 receiver/DB says when mentioning his dad being his biggest mentor, “My dad constantly tells me what I should be doing and what I should be looking out for during football games or on the field.” There are many different ways the players get ready to be on the field, through either prayers, music, meditation, or drills. When asked how they prepared before a game to calm their nerves, both Howard and Chase Fluke #83 wide receiver said they find time to pray before getting on the field. Dallas Kautz #56 offensive/defensive line and linebacker says, “We practice tackling, because we need more practice with it.” The team thinks this season is going well and has potential to succeed by being confident, working together, helping each other, and using these strategies frequently.

When watching the game there is zero hesitation to assist one another. It’s not just kids playing football, they make sure they work and learn together as a team. When Maddox Arellano #68 left tackle, talks about what his hopes are for the season he explains, “I will get better and the team will get better as a whole and our chemistry will get better so we will be more in sync with each other.” In Arellano’s opinion, being on a team together helps them physically and mentally, and prepares them to grow together as people.

Football has impacted this team’s life, no matter how many years each individual has done it. There are a million different reasons why people enjoy this sport. Not only is football fun, (which is what majority of the players we interviewed said) but also as Howard stated, “Football has taught me a lot of stuff, it taught me to be a good person and how to include everyone.” The way that it brings a state or community together is the best feeling or thing that a person can make happen because of them and their team. This team is in for an outstanding season, and an incredible future of football awaits every member of the team.
