Why do we still eat McDonald’s fast food even though it affects our health?

Bella Schulte, Journalist

McDonald’s is one of the most popular fast food restaurants, but the most common question is “why?” The most obvious answer is “Because it’s good”. Yes, it tastes good at the moment, however it is not good for your health. There have been multiple articles, videos, and movies about how McDonald’s impacts your health in a negative way. After eating McDonald’s, you tend to feel more gross than you did before and not feel as healthy as you should be. It is highly common to have a feeling of regret after eating the fast food, since it does make you feel so gross.

And yet, throughout the years McDonald’s has been the most popular fast food place. In 2020, it was reported that in the United States, McDonald’s has made 4.73 billion dollars in sales. But why are they making so much money for food that isn’t even good for your health? Each meal from McDonald’s is high in calories, high fats, and contains a lot of salt. Too much of all of that can be negative towards your health. It can cause heart diseases, diabetes, cancer, and many other health problems.

Additionally, many animals have been killed in the process of supplying food for McDonald’s. A study conducted by Peta states that “nearly 300 million chickens are slaughtered for the chain each year”. Many people have their own opinion on how they should treat innocent animals. Yes, animal food does taste good but it’s not great for our health, and it is not good for the animals’ health since they are being killed for just people to eat when there are many other choices other than animals. Pigs have also been tormented and abused, along with cows, just to make good money from hungry people. Not enough people know the truth about what is in Mcdonalds food and how they get the materials to make their food.

After talking to a few people about how they felt towards McDonald’s food, I had a couple of different responses, however they all felt the same way in the end. First I had an interview with Lake Stevens Mother, Lisa Schulte. Her take on McDonald’s was negative but had a couple positives by the end of the interview. In her words she states “It doesn’t have any nutritional value, I always feel gross and sluggish afterwards,”. Although Lisa had said she feels gross after eating the food from McDonald’s, she does agree that it is easy to get fast food such as McDonald’s when you’re on the go. After listening to Schulte I completely understood and agreed with her opinion on the topic. “Even though their food is really good, I don’t agree with how people choose to treat the animals in the process,” Schulte has a good understanding about the process of the animals being killed to be eaten, and she does not agree that it should be violent.

Then after talking with Schulte and hearing her input I then when you talk to a ninth grader from Cavelero Mid high, Hannah prince. As I was listening to her opinion on McDonald’s she says “I feel gross because junk food makes me feel bad,”.Although Prince feels gross after eating McDonald’s food, she does always feel good in the moment of eating the food because of how delicious it taste, however with the outcome of feeling gross after is never good. It is common in the teenage years to be more insecure about their bodies, Prince agrees that with junk food like McDonald’s it creates you to gain weight and it harder to lose that weight, then making you feel more insecure about your body in the future.

In conclusion, after talking to friends and family about how they feel about eating junk food, both responses lead to a negative side and not as much positive. Even though the food may taste really good, it does affect your health more and more as you eat it more commonly. Staying healthy and taking care of your body’s health is one of the most important things, but with too much salt, too much fat, and too many calories it will not have a good impact on keeping your body clean and healthy.
