Should You Buy The New NBA2K23 Game?

The newest game in the NBA2K series, first released on September 8th 2022, has not had the best initial ratings. This is a take on the graphics, ratings, physics, and just overall enjoyment in the game.

When you first load into the game you run into a problem; every one-two weeks you have to re-input all of your 2k account information. Such as your email password, read through all the agreement forms again etcetera. Just thinking about it doesn’t sound too bad, but when you are just trying to chill and play it can get inconvenient. When you finally get loaded into the game you are met with five different play options. The first is My Career, where you create your very own player from scratch and can control his whole career. This is a great way to earn coins that you can use called MT in the game. Next is My Team, where you open packs to unlock players, play games with them, get coins and buy better players. Jordan Challenges, Play Now and My League, in My League you can control any or all teams in the NBA. The settings option labeled Features, and something similar to a tv show labeled 2kTV. 2kTV is a show where the host goes through different things that went into making the game, new features, winners of in game tournaments, and plenty more. The graphics in the new 2k are so realistic that it is almost impossible to tell the difference between the game and real life.

In the game at this moment there are zero 99 overall players, which is saying something considering the amount of young talent in the league right now with Giannis Antetokounmpo being the highest rated at 97. Players like Steph, Lebron, Luka, KD, and back to back MVP Nikola Jockic all at 96 overall. The physics are definitely one of the lacking parts of the game. For a game that claims to be a realistic game, it is anything but. Take the Atlanta Hawks for example; you have Trae Young with a 86 overall three point shot, which seems a little low for Trae who shot 38% from three last year (which is over the current league average). Anyway you take him and Clint Capela a center with a 25 overall 3 point shot and their shot meters look the exact same. The shot meter is what helps you time your shots and give it better odds of going in, the closer to the green zone you are the better odds. However if you get a perfect release or “Green” then it has almost a 100% chance of going in, and the 2 players shot meters are the exact same.

Comparing it to older 2k games it is somewhat middle of the pack; the graphics are definitely some of the best we have ever seen in a sports game. The rating and physics are dropping the overall rating but the enjoyment is immense. I give NBA2k23 a 6.5/10. If you are looking for a new game to play, 2k23 is definitely an option but not necessarily the first choice.
